Cabinet quotes: Construction leaders chime in on Carney’s choices

Cabinet quotes: Construction leaders chime in on Carney’s choices

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney made some major moves as he formed a new cabinet May 13, and while there are some old faces in new posts, there are also 24 new faces and even some new portfolios.

Carney named 28 full ministers to his cabinet and also appointed a second tier of 10 secretaries of state.

The construction industry was quick to respond to the cabinet changes. Here’s some notable quotes from industry leaders.

“Today PM Mark Carney unveiled cabinet. If the Canadian government wants respect from labourers, perhaps let’s start with a minister of labour in Cabinet. Respect is earned. This is a slap in the face to our members who show up day in and day out to build and strengthen Canada.” – Joe Mancinelli – LIUNA International vice president and Canadian director, on X

“Congratulations to Patty Hajdu and John Zerucelli, who will hold the positions of minister of jobs and families and minister responsible for the federal economic development agency for northern ontario, and secretary of state for labour, respectively. CBTU looks forward to working together to advance policies that will improve the lives of unionized skilled trades workers and build the national trade and energy infrastructure needed to ensure Canadian economic independence.” – Sean Strickland, Canada’s Building Trades Unions executive director

“When Prime Minister Carney closed his initial press conference, his final statement was ‘Build big, build bold, and build now.’ We are ready to work with this new cabinet to see that come to fruition. The federal government has an important choice to make in how it supports essential industries such as the mechanical contracting sector. Canadians need mechanical contractors to build the systems we rely on each day, and our sector needs a government that is prepared to ‘Build Canada Now.’ We look forward to working with this new cabinet to realize that goal.” – Tania Johnston, Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada Chief Executive Officer

“It is refreshing to see so many new faces appointed to this cabinet. Now is the time for this new government — and new cabinet members — to bring local expertise, fresh ideas and solutions to the table, and work collaboratively with industry to overcome pressing challenges, such as growing labour shortages, outdated procurement processes, and navigating global trade disruptions.” – Rodrigue Gilbert, Canadian Construction Association president.
