Manitoba company fined after worker fatally injured in blade incident

WINNIPEG — Wintec Building Services Inc. has been fined a total of $70,000 in relation to a July 2022 incident where a work was fatally injured.

According to a release, the company provides excavation and base services, asphalt paving and supply, property and roadway maintenance, aggregate supply and snow removal services throughout Manitoba.

On July 20, 2022, a worker was fatally injured while working at Wintec Building Services Inc. after falling into the blades of an unguarded radiator fan blade.

Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) officials conducted an investigation and laid charges under the Workplace Safety and Health Act.

On Jan. 27, 2026, Wintec Building Services Inc. pleaded guilty to section 16.7(2)(a) of the WSH Regulation, namely, failing to ensure that when machine or tool safeguards are removed or made ineffective, alternate protective measures are in place until the safeguard is replaced.

The court imposed a fine of $50,000 with an additional $20,000 to be used for educating the public on occupational safety and health.
