Queensborough Bridge deck renewal has begun

Queensborough Bridge deck renewal has begun
GOVERNMENT OF B.C. FLICKR — A new multi-use overpass across Stewardson Way will be located east of the Queensborough Bridge where there is no pedestrian crosswalk. It will allow pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross 6th Avenue and Stewardson Way. The overpass will also provide easier access to Grimston Park, the 22nd Street transit exchange and the Millennium/Expo SkyTrain station.

NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. – Work on the deck renewal has now started for the , meaning drivers may see some delays.

Nighttime lane closures are expected to occur through to fall 2027, with a winter shutdown planned between November 2026 to March 2027 when no work will take place, a release reads.

During the nighttime closure windows, traffic will flow one lane in each direction over the bridge.

Lane closures are anticipated to take place at the following times:

* Weekdays – lane closures from 9:30 p.m. until 5 a.m.

* Weekends – lane closures from 9:30 p.m. until 9 a.m.

As work is weather-dependent, timelines may shift, the release adds.

It should also be noted, during construction closure times, lane width will be reduced to 3.5 metres. Oversized vehicles exceeding those widths will be stopped and may need to wait an extended time to cross. They are being encourages to use alternative routes such as the stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge or Knight Street Bridge.

Pedestrian access will be maintained in both directions during construction and sidewalks will remain open.

This project news comes after B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation and Transit awarded Kingston Construction Ltd. a $20.8 million contract to upgrade the bridge earlier this year.

According to a release, the Queensborough Bridge was originally constructed in 1960 and carries four lanes of Highway 91A traffic, two lanes northbound and southbound, across the north arm of the Fraser River, connecting New Westminster to Lulu Island.

Over its lifespan, the bridge has undergone several major modifications, including seismic and safety upgrades with median-barrier installation and barrier walls to separate pedestrians from motorists.
