BC Hydro’s 2025 call for power nearly exceeds target by double

VANCOUVER — BC Hydro launched a second call for power in July 2025 to acquire as much as 5,000 gigawatt hours of clean or renewable electricity projects.

According to a release, the organization received proposals for nearly two times more energy than it was targeting.

Fourteen proposals totalling more than 9,100 gigawatts hours per year were submitted, enough to power about 900,000 homes annually, as well as capacity of more than 3,000 megawatts.

The proposals represent a mix of technologies and regional participation: 13 wind projects and one solar project, with five proposals from the southern Interior, two from the central Interior, four from the North Coast and three from the Peace region.

With no maximum size cap in this call, 10 proposals exceed 200 megawatts, ranging overall from 63 to 496 megawatts, the release adds.

The 2025 call for power was also designed to ensure First Nations play a central role in the province’s clean-energy future. All projects include a minimum 25 per cent equity ownership for First Nations partners.

Similar to 2024, the Canada Infrastructure Bank continues to support First Nations as active participants in British Columbia’s clean-energy transition by providing access to competitive financing.

BC Hydro will now evaluate proposals and award electricity-purchase agreements in the coming months. Projects could begin coming online as early as fall 2031, with all projects in service by October 2033.

The 2025 call for power is expected to unlock as much as $6 billion in private investment and create as many as 1,500 jobs annually during development and construction, the release notes.
