VANCOUVER — A new development in Vancouver’s River District is now complete.
Designed by GBL Architects, the Sawmill Housing Development features 337 units and pairs a 26-storey tower along Marine Way with a six-storey zigzagging mid-rise on Sawmill Crescent. There are also two-storey townhomes at street level.
The exterior features a maroon, square-profile corrugated metal, contrasted with light-grey high-density cement panels, explains a release.
“Sawmill embraces a climate-forward envelope and material palette rooted in the site’s industrial history. We have aimed for a building that feels durable, dignified and demonstrably livable for decades,” says Daniel Eisenberg, principal of GBL Architects, in a statement.
The Sawmill housing development also targeted Step 3 of the BC Energy Step Code.
Of the 337 homes, 220 non-profit rentals are operated by the M’akola Housing Society and 117 co-op homes with Community Land Trust. The units range from studios to family-sized three-bedroom units, including approximately 70 three-bedroom units.
The province contributed approximately $36.8 million from BC Housing’s Community Housing Fund, along with annual operating funding of about $1.8 million, the release adds. The City of Vancouver provided the site through a nominal lease and approximately $10 million in development cost charge waivers.
