Widening of Highway 11/17 complete near Thunder Bay

THUNDER BAY, ONT. — Major construction to widen two sections of the Trans-Canada Highway between Thunder Bay and Nipigon is now complete and marks a milestone in the Province of Ontario’s plan to twin more than 100 kilometres of the corridor.

Crews have widened Highway 11/17 from Coughlin Road to Highway 582 and from Highway 587 to Pearl Lake. Both sections feature two lanes in each direction, separated by a median, doubling the highway’s capacity, a release reads.

Highway 11/17 from Thunder Bay to Nipigon is a strategic link in the Trans-Canada Highway corridor, moving goods valued at more than $45.3 billion every year.

Lanes are currently open to the public but short-term lane closures will be required in spring 2026 to allow for additional work.

The province touts preliminary design is also underway to widen Highway 11/17 from Highway 582 to Dorion East Loop Road (12 kilometres), and detail design is underway from Pearl Lake to west of CP Overhead at Ouimet (7.6 kilometres).
